Workshops and courses for the public

In Luna Maya we offer workshops and courses to the general public on a monthly basis. 
Workshop schedule for Summer 2009:

Creative Expression for Children: Have fun playing with clay and painting a mural on Mondays and Thursdays from 5 to 6pm. Kids 4 to 11 welcome. 35 pesos a class.

Childbirth Education Class: Every wednesday from 5 to 7 free! 

Birth Camp: (held in Spanish) September 14 to 19. Check the spanish section on our webpage for detailed information about this exciting one week intensive.  

Infant massage, Prenatal massage, Pregnancy Celebration and other courses will start up again in September. Stay posted!

 

 

Detailed Workshop Information

 
 

Baby Massage Course

The baby massage course helps parents establish a special relationship with their baby while helping facilitate a baby´s emotional and motor skills development. The four benefits of baby massage are:
  • Attachment and communication: through the massage parents get to know their baby better and establish a new form of communication.
  • Relaxation: A child will learn to manage his or her tension better, which facilitates deeper sleep.
  • Relief: The massage relieves emotional tension, colic, constipation, and pains and aches related to growth, teething, etc.
  • Stimulation: The massage stimulates the newborn's senses as well as his or her nervous, lymphatic, digestive respiratory, and circulation systems.
This course is for babies from 0 to 12 months of age and consists in 4 classes of 2 hours each.

Facilitator:  Anna Artigas.  Cost:  400 pesos.  Enrollment in Luna Maya!

Prenatal Massage Course

In this course we learn massage techniques that favor the wellbeing of a pregnant woman, facilitating muscular relaxation, pain relief in the back and the hips, and improvement in blood circulation; in addition to allowing the father to develop a privileged communication with his child. We also learn about the points that can be used to modulate pain during birth.

This
course is for couples and consists in 3 classes of 2 hours each.

Facilitator: Anna Artigas.  Cost:  300 pesos.  Enrollment in Luna Maya!

Pregnancy Celebration

Our pregnancy celebration is a day dedicated to conmemorating your pregnancy through art.  We work with introspective exercises and various artistic modalities, including: belly molds, sculpture, song, drawing, curative storytelling, and henna tattoos.  Creative exploration inspires you to profoundly contemplate this transformative experience in ways that allow you to discover new meanings, thereby honoring your fertility, your life, and your child with greater awareness.  Come celebrate the beauty of this moment of your life! 

Facilitators:  Anna Artigas.  Cost:  250 pesos.  Enrollment in Luna Maya!

Birth Camp

Birth Camp is a one week intensive retreat designed to connect with the essence of birth and midwifery. In response to the high demand of students, midwives and birth workers to spend time at Luna Maya learning from the women, the midwives and the cultural fusion that we are honored to work within. Birth Camp is a time for women to reconnect with the the creative wisdom we share, cultivate skills and provide traditional skills for contemporary practice. They are a time to connect with ourselves as witnesses to the joy and the mystery of birth while providing solutions for difficulties and challenges. 

Birth Camp is carried out twice a year; in February in English and in September (in Spanish- see above).

Monday 1: Orientation and Opening ceremony

Working with the uterus with abdominal massage

Tuesday 2: Visit to the Mayan Medicine Museum

Energy class and healings with traditional Mayan Healer

Wednesday 3: Making space for babies to pass

Thursday 4: Visit with traditional Mayan Midwives in Tenejapa

Friday 5: Integrating loss and grief 

Saturday 6:   Closing Ceremony Pipe Ceremony in a Teepee on the Mountain

Cost of the program: $900.00. Includes lodging, breakfast and all workshop costs.

Doula Training

We periodically carry out Doula Trainings with the purpose of preparing women who desire to accompany other women in the pregnancy and birth process. This course is designed to put women in touch with their own love, wisdom, fertility, and power of creation as the source of their ability to enthusiastically and responsibly accompany women in the emotional and physical aspects of this important life process. The course's technical component provides an overview of the anatomical and physiological aspects of pregnancy and birth as well as practical skills on how to be with birth.

Publications for Sale

In our store we offer books by various authors and publishers centered on themes such as pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding, and nutrition and care for women and children.

Through Fundación Creavida we offer books in Spanish written by Michel Odent, Laura Lerner and others, in addition to Creavida magazine, which provides the latest information regarding pregnancy, birth and post-partum. As part of the Mexican chapter of La Leche League, we also have the latest editions of El Arte Femenino de Amamantar (The Feminine Art of Breastfeeding) and Lactancia Sí (Breastfeeding Yes!), the bimonthly magazine from LLL-Mexico.

 

The Luna Maya Solidarity Library!

In Luna Maya we offer a solidarity library where for a minimal sign-up fee members can borrow books. It includes books, magazines and educational material on a variety of themes, including: women's health, midwifery, gynecology and obstetrics, rural health, alternative healing, and childhood. The collection also includes a range of fiction titles for member's pleasure reading.
